Authors who treat it like “the same cover, just bigger” are the ones who end up stuck in rejection loops. Here’s what actually goes into a hardcover case cover, and where most authors go wrong.

What Makes a Hardcover Case Cover Different From a Paperback Cover?

A paperback cover is a flexible wrap: front, spine, and back glued directly onto the trimmed page block, with a thin bleed edge to keep the print clean at the trim line.

A hardcover case cover works differently. It wraps around a rigid board and folds over the edges to be glued to the inside covers, which means the file needs extra zones a paperback file simply doesn’t have, space for the fold-over, and space for the hinge where the cover bends when the book is opened. Treat these as two genuinely different file types, not two sizes of the same file.

The Anatomy of a KDP Hardcover Case Cover

KDP breaks the hardcover cover file down into a few distinct zones, and understanding each one is the difference between a clean upload and a rejected one:

  • Cover file – the full file: front cover, back cover, spine, and wrap combined into one flattened PDF.
  • Front cover / back cover – the visible area readers actually see once the book is printed and closed.
  • Spine – the width here is dictated entirely by your final page count and paper stock, so it changes every time your manuscript does.
  • Margin – a buffer zone where you shouldn’t place text or important imagery, unless it’s deliberately designed to wrap onto the inside cover.
  • Wrap – the portion of the file that folds around the case board itself and gets glued to the inside cover. Background art and color need to extend fully into this zone, or you’ll end up with a visible unprinted edge once the book is bound.
  • Hinge – the zone where the cover physically bends when a reader opens the book.

Every one of these zones scales differently depending on your trim size and page count, which is exactly why guessing the measurements yourself is risky.

File Specs You Need to Hit

Before you send a case cover file to print, run through this checklist:

  • Single flattened PDF containing the front cover, spine, and back cover combined into one image — not three separate files.
  • 300 DPI minimum resolution at final size.
  • Embed all fonts. If a font isn’t embedded, KDP’s system (or the printer) will substitute it, and your carefully chosen typography can shift or break.
  • Avoid spot colors. Convert everything to CMYK before export, spot colors from systems like Pantone aren’t compatible with KDP’s print-on-demand process.
  • Don’t include color profiles. They get stripped automatically before printing and can cause unpredictable color shifts if left in.
  • Remove crop marks, color bars, and leftover template text. These are meant as design guides, not print elements, and need to be deleted before your final export.

Common Hardcover Case Cover Mistakes

Most of the rejected or reprinted hardcover files we see come down to a handful of repeat offenders:

  1. Reusing the paperback cover file. The bleed-only paperback wrap doesn’t account for the wrap and hinge zones a hardcover needs, and the spine calculation itself is different between the two formats. It’s a new file, not a resize.
  2. Artwork that stops short of the wrap zone. If your background color or image doesn’t extend all the way into the wrap area, you’ll end up with a visible unfinished strip once the case is assembled.
  3. Important text or logos sitting inside the margin. Anything placed there risks folding onto the inside cover instead of staying on the visible face of the book.
  4. Leftover crop marks or template guide text. These are the single easiest thing to forget to delete before exporting your final PDF, and they’re an easy reason for a file to bounce back.
  5. Unflattened transparency layers. Effects like drop shadows or transparent overlays that aren’t flattened before export can render incorrectly, or even break the file entirely, once it hits the print pipeline.
  6. Spine text on a manuscript that’s too thin. Spine text needs a minimum page count to be legible at all, put text on a spine that’s too narrow, and the cover gets flagged for adjustment before it can go live.
  7. Submitting below 300 DPI. It’s the most basic requirement on the list, and still one of the most common warnings authors get.

How to Get Your Case Cover Right the First Time

A few habits will save you a full round-trip of corrections:

  • Regenerate the template every time your final page count changes, don’t reuse a spine width from an earlier draft.
  • Tell your designer explicitly that the file is for hardcover, not paperback, before they start. It sounds obvious, but it’s the single most common source of confusion when cover work gets outsourced.
  • Order a printed proof before you finalize anything. A screen preview won’t catch every wrap or color issue the way a physical copy will.
