KDP Editions Not Linking? How to Fix Kindle, Paperback & Hardcover Listings

On this page

You’ve published your eBook, paperback, and hardcover, and instead of one clean product page with a format switcher, you’ve got three separate listings scattered across Amazon. KDP editions not linking is one of the most common post-publish headaches authors run into, and the fix usually isn’t as complicated as it feels. Here’s why it happens and how to actually resolve it.

Why Editions Link in the First Place

When you publish multiple formats of the same book, Amazon tries to automatically match them into a single product detail page. It does this by comparing your book’s metadata across formats primarily the title, subtitle, and author name. If everything matches exactly, the formats get combined into one listing with a format switcher for customers.

It’s worth knowing there are actually two separate things people call “linking” on KDP, and they’re not the same:

  • Detail page linking, this is the customer-facing link, where all your formats appear together on one Amazon product page. This is the one most authors actually care about.
  • Bookshelf linking, a separate feature inside your KDP dashboard that lets you view all formats of a title together on your own Bookshelf. Using “Link existing paperback” or “Link existing hardcover” on your Bookshelf makes your own dashboard easier to navigate, but it does not link the live customer-facing detail pages. Don’t mistake one for the other when you’re troubleshooting.

How Long Does Linking Usually Take?

Detail page linking isn’t instant. Amazon states it can take up to a week after each edition goes live for the formats to find each other and merge into one page. Some authors report it happening within a day or two; others have seen it take closer to ten days. If you’ve just published, the first move is simply to wait, a large share of “not linking” issues resolve on their own within that window.

Common Reasons Editions Aren’t Linking

If it’s been more than a week and your formats still haven’t merged, it’s usually one of these:

  1. A metadata mismatch. Title, subtitle, and author name need to match exactly across every format including punctuation, spacing, and capitalization. “In Search of White Butterflies” and “In search of White Butterflies” won’t be treated as the same book.
  2. Different KDP accounts. If your eBook and print editions were published under different KDP accounts, they won’t auto-link, no matter how closely the metadata matches.
  3. A format published outside of KDP. Detail page linking only works when all formats are published directly through KDP. If your paperback went out through IngramSpark or an aggregator like Draft2Digital instead of KDP itself, Amazon has no way to automatically connect it to your KDP eBook.
  4. Author Central isn’t claimed. Claiming all your editions under the same Author Central account, with matching author details, helps Amazon confirm they belong together and can trigger linking that hasn’t happened on its own.

How to Fix It Yourself First

Before contacting support, run through this checklist:

  • Compare your metadata side by side. Pull up the title, subtitle, and author name for every format and check them character by character, not just at a glance.
  • Confirm every format is actually published through KDP, under the same KDP account.
  • Claim your books through Author Central if you haven’t already, using an author name that matches across every edition.
  • Give it the full week before assuming something’s broken, most cases just need time.

When to Contact KDP Support

If your metadata matches, all formats are on KDP under the same account, and a full week has passed with no linking, it’s time to reach out to KDP Support directly. Have this ready before you contact them:

  • The ASIN of your Kindle eBook
  • The 10-digit ISBN of your paperback or hardcover

Support can manually link the editions once you provide these. And while you’re waiting on a fix, resist the urge to create a brand-new listing for the “missing” format, a duplicate listing while your book is already under review just creates a second problem support will need to untangle, on top of the original linking issue.

Getting every format of a book properly connected on one Amazon page matters for how readers discover and buy your book, a missing link often means a lost sale. If your editions aren’t merging and you’d like a second set of eyes on the setup, our team at Pacific Publishing is happy to take a look. Get in touch and we’ll help you sort it out.
